Elna decoder

Elna serial number decoder

Elna made it almost easy: from 1963 to 1982, the first letter of the serial number is the year. Elna USA published the chart; this decoder reads it for you — and handles the earlier machines, whose year hides in the first digit, with the ambiguity shown honestly.

The 1982 code is not a letter at all — it is a stamped mark like an upside-down V. 1969 used two letters, G and H. Letters I, O, Q and W were never used.

Before 1963: the first-digit rule

Earlier Elnas — the grass-green Elna 1 and the Supermatic — carry the year in the first digit of the serial. The chart gives the digit only, so a serial starting with 5 reads as 1945 or 1955; the model settles it (the Elna 1 is the 1940s–early-1950s machine, the Supermatic ran 1952–1963). The decoder gives you both readings and the model guidance instead of pretending the digit says more than it does.

From 1981: the week digits

In the chart's last two years Elna added the production week: a serial beginning Y32 was made in the 32nd week of 1981. The decoder reads the week when it is there.

Elna questions

Where is the serial number on an Elna?

On many models it is stamped inside the casting to the right of the thread take-up slot; on others it is on a plate under the machine or on the back. If you find a number on the motor, that is the motor's — use the casting or plate number.

My Elna is newer than 1982. Can you date it?

Not from a public chart — Elna published no letter code past 1982, so this decoder will not invent one. The model name and features are the dating tools for later machines.

Are old Elnas worth anything?

Complete Supermatic outfits with their cam sets have recently changed hands around $150 to $350. The green Elna 1 is the collectible; completeness — cams, case, knee lever — drives the price. See the value guide.

Selling a Swiss machine?

Elna buyers are specialists and they check completeness hard. The kit's checklist covers the cam sets, cases and levers that separate a complete outfit from a parts machine — before your buyer finds the gaps.
